The slogan "Zero Tolerance Makes Zero Sense" holds very strong with appoints of the zero tolerance rules. Many studies have shown that the Zero Tolerance Policies lead to more suspensions, more drop outs, and more angst against the schools. Zero Tolerance Policies can be extreme for a minor or even a harmless infraction. There has been many stories where a kid has brought in something as harmless as a plastic knife(Which they serve in schools for lunches) and was suspended, or another story where Twelve-year-old honor student shared her inhaler with student suffering asthma attack on bus; she received a ban on after school activities.
A 2008 study in Florida found that Black students were two and half more times likely to be referred to the judicial system. It is also true that they are more likely to be expelled or receive a harsher punishments compared to their white counterparts. I'd like to share these quotes with you by Zorka Karanxha as I could not put better.
“These policies are yanking these children out of classrooms and funneling them into the criminal justice system, into prisons,”
“And once a child is in the system, the opportunity is lost. Once you’re there, you’re there, and even once you get out of prison, you have a record, and people won’t hire you.”
This can't be disputed once your child has brought in a "plastic knife" that's on your permanent record. Schools can be ruining children's chances at getting somewhere in life effectively putting them on the streets increasing crime and drug problems all around America. I encourage you to Google facts about Zero Tolerance Policies and you will find that that I have said holds true.
You make some good points here. I agree that your examples show some ridiculous punishments. I am personally a fan of looking for trends in behavior. Once can be an innocent mistake, but administrators and law enforcement need to be concerned about allowing a victim to get hurt after someone has demonstrated a ignorance or disregard for common sense and safety.
